Injuries Sustained by Kids While Running Up by 34 Percent
Clinical Pediatrics has reported a new study that reveals an increase of 34% in running-related injuries in children aged between 6 and 18, in the last 14 years, between the years 1994 and 2007. The figures were for injuries of the lower extremities, treated in the US emergency departments.
However, researchers suggest that the actual number of running-related injuries may be higher, since the study analyzed only those that were sent to ER, which probably were the severe cases.
Around 224,344 running-related...
Device Simulating Pancreas to Combat Diabetes in Pregnant Women
British researchers have successfully tested, ” artificial pancreas” also called”closed-loop insulin delivery system”, in 10 pregnant women with type I diabetes.
According to lead author of the study, Helen Murphy of Cambridge University, “To discover an artificial pancreas can help maintain near-normal glucose levels in these women is very promising.” The artificial pancreas was created by combining two commonly available gadgets, used separately by type...

Rogue Gene Discovery Could Keep Cancer From Spreading
British scientists have discovered a rogue gene that allows cancer to spread throughout the body and they hope this discovery will help them to stop cancer from spreading.
The researchers announced on Monday that the WWP2 gene, which is a bonding agent that is inside cancer cells, causes a natural inhibitor to break down in the body that usually keeps cancer cells from spreading further.
If the WWP2 is blocked, the body’s levels of the natural inhibitor go up and so the cancer cells stay dormant,...

Cigarette Smoke Blows Away Good Health in Minutes
A new research, highlighting the devastating ill effects of cigarette smoking, points out that tobacco smoke causes genetic damage within minutes. The results of the research should send a warning to all those who smoke, to quit immediately and to discourage those who would like to try it.
The long-term adverse effects of smoking on the heart and lungs were already well known, but chilling facts from the new research suggests that damage sets in immediately.
Lead author Stephen S. Hecht, from...
Tackle High Blood Pressure with Blueberries
A new study has revealed that the bioflavonoid pigments, anthocyanins found in blueberries offers protection against high blood pressure. High amounts of anthocyanins that appear purple, blue or red according to the pH value, are also found in blackberries, black currant, eggplants, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, and blood oranges and these are said to be high in anti-oxidants because of the presence of anthocyanins. The presence of other flavonoids in tea, dark chocolate, and red wine...
