Spots are not limited to the oily T-zone of the face. They can show up anywhere, any time.
Acne develops where sebaceous glands are most numerous: the face, scalp, neck, chest, back, upper arms, and shoulders.
Acne mechanica is a form of acne that is caused by heat, pressure and repetitive frictional rubbing against the skin. It can be the result of wearing tight-fitting synthetic workout clothes, bra straps, and underwear. Place a clean towel down before lying on exercise mats or equipment. If you sweat through exercise and don’t shower immediately afterwards, you are inviting flare-ups. Sweat traps dirt and oil in the pores. High temperatures and humidity act in the same way. At the very least, wash the areas prone to acne after your workout. Don’t go straight to the steam room – shower first to get rid of bacteria.
If you have oily hair, shampoo daily but avoid heavy conditioners or styling products. If you have breakouts on your forehead, having a fringe may be a contributing factor. Style hair so that it is off your face and neck.
High-potency glycolic acid (10-15 per cent) works well on the thicker, tougher skin of the body. Be careful on the chest, which can sometimes be more sensitive. Cleansing pads work well for body areas and may be easier to use.
Therapies for body acne are similar to those for the face, but the former is more resistant to treatment as it is harder to reach. Since you can’t see it, you never really know when pores get congested. Have a friend or family member check your back occasionally, or see a professional for regular treatments. You need to treat back acne aggressively, and as skin on the back is tougher, it can take tougher products. 10 per cent benzoyl peroxide wash is often recommended. Continuous treatment with a comedolytic agent such as topical tretinoin may be recommended if back acne persists indefinitely. If inflammatory lesions are present, benzoyl peroxide or topical antibiotics may be added to your regimen. For severe chest and back acne, RoAccutane and steroid injections are indicated.
