Lymphoseek Approved By U.S. FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave its seal of approval to Lymphoseek the radioactive tracer to be used with patients suffering from melanoma or breast cancer and who are undergoing removal surgery of tumor draining lymph nodes. The approval is the first for a new drug used in lymph node mapping in over 30 years. In 1971, sulfur colloid was approved by the FDA and in 1981, the government approved the use of isosulfan blue. Mapping lymph nodes helps medical experts to detect if the nodes contain...

Melanoma Mutations Help See How Cancer Grows

Two research groups have made big steps in better understanding the preliminary science of the cancers that are the deadliest. The groups found that mutations in the majority of melanomas are much different that any seen before in cancer. Researchers said the changes have occurred in areas that control genes but not in the genes. The mutations found by the researchers are the exact type caused by ultraviolent light exposure, which indicates they could be amongst the first changes in DNA in a cell’s...

Melanoma Risk Much Higher for those with Red Hair

For many years, doctors have warned people who have red hair, freckles and fair skin to not expose themselves to, too much sun and the ultraviolet rays that are so damaging. Medical experts said that going outside without a protective hat or sunscreen was a recipe for skin cancer. Now however, a recently published study suggests that those people with ginger hair and fair complexions face a much higher risk of developing dead skin cancer even if they are completely protected. The study, which was...

Tanning Beds Cause Skin Cancers

A new study has linked indoor tanning to squamous and basal cell skin cancers. Indoor tanning has already been associated with a higher risk of contracting the deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma and now appears that it increases the chances of other forms of skin cancer. Researchers said that tanning beds are responsible for over 170,000 new cases of squamous and basal cell cancer of the skin annually in the U.S. They also said the earlier someone starts using the beds, the worse the cancer...

Studies Show Melanoma Appears More in Wealthy White Women

A recent study done in California suggests that melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, is more likely to occur in white women living in wealthy neighborhoods. The study was published in the Archives of Dermatology journal. The study found that surprisingly, the income levels of the women seemed to affect the rate women got the disease more than if they lived in an area with a high ultraviolet radiation level. It was thought this was due to some women in higher incomes frequenting tanning salons,...
