Up to 20% of Children are afflicted with Mental Disorder

The Centers for Disease Control released a report on Friday that says as many as 1 out of 5 children suffer in the U.S. from a mental disorder. The report also said that the number of children who are diagnosed with a mental disorder has been on the increase for over a decade. This was the first ever study by the CDC of mental disorders amongst children between the ages of 3 and 17. Researchers found that childhood mental disorders affect nearly 20% of children and cost annually more than $247 billion...

Anxiety Problems In Children Linked To Avoidance Of Issues

According to a new Mayo Clinic study, children who avoid situations or objects that frighten them are more likely to develop anxiety issues in the future. Study author Stephen Whiteside, a pediatric psychologist with the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center, said, “We found that avoidance predicted future anxiety. Kids who tended to avoid at ‘time one’ also tended to have worse anxiety one year later.” The findings were published in the journal Behavior Therapy. Two short surveys developed...

Middle-Aged Americans Suicide rate Increases Sharply

In the U.S., the rate of suicide amongst people that are middle-aged has jumped by more than 28% of the past 10 years. During that period the country has suffered a mortgage crisis and a deep recession, said government analysts Thursday. The trend showed up the most among white women and men who are middle-aged. The rate of suicide for that groups increased by more than 40% between the years 1999 and 2010. Researchers placed the middle age group between the ages of 35 and 64. For people who were...

Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has been accused of paying fellow pharmaceutical rivals to slow down production of generic versions of the most profitable antidepressant the company had. Britain’s Office of Fair Trading launched its own investigation into the payoffs that Glaxo has been accused of making to keep its sales of Seroxat as high as possible for as long as possible. The alleged payments have been dubbed “pay for delay” and are said to have taken place between 2001 and 2004 to...

Study Questions Effectiveness Of ADHD Medications

Questions about the effectiveness of treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have been raised in a new study. The study examined young children taking medication for ADHD and found that many preschoolers continued to have serious symptoms years after their original diagnosis. The results of the study were published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. The children who were treated with medication did not appear to have markedly less severe symptoms...

By 2050, Alzheimer’s Cases Expected To Triple

According to a new study published in the journal Neurology, there will be 13.8 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease by 2050. This is a significant increase from the 4.7 million living with the condition in 2010. A substantial, aging baby boomer population of 78 million and increasing lifespans are responsible for the anticipated ballooning of the number of people with Alzheimer’s. Data covering 10,802 African Americans and whites in Chicago who were age 65 and older was...

It has been well documented that some women, after having a child, suffer from depression. However, what was less known until now is how many women suffer from postpartum depression. Five Disorders Share Genetic Underpinnings

Schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism share common underpinnings genetically, despite the difference in symptoms and the course of each disease, discovered researchers. The study indicates that the single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs in two calcium channel activity genes appear to have a role in all five of the disorders, said researchers from Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital. The new findings come from the genome...

The Many Hurdles Of Obtaining Mental Health Care

There have been many broad-based proclamations about the sorry state of mental health care in America in the media recently, often prompted by some tragedy involving someone that has been diagnosed as mental ill.  Fortunately, more people will soon have health insurance that provides mental health coverage through the new healthcare laws passed by the federal government.  However, having mental health coverage only goes so far when there aren’t enough healthcare professionals who accept it or...

Clues to CTE Disorder Prior to Death

Scientists, for just the first time, think they have been able to detect a protein in living patients that grows inside the brains of people that suffer from CTE – chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is a neurodegenerative disorder that is tied to repeated injuries to the brain that afflicts military veterans and football players. Prior to now, doctors only diagnosed CTE during an autopsy based upon the presence of the protein known as tau. However, researchers at UCLA published a paper on Tuesday...
