Middle-Aged Americans Suicide rate Increases Sharply
In the U.S., the rate of suicide amongst people that are middle-aged has jumped by more than 28% of the past 10 years. During that period the country has suffered a mortgage crisis and a deep recession, said government analysts Thursday.
The trend showed up the most among white women and men who are middle-aged. The rate of suicide for that groups increased by more than 40% between the years 1999 and 2010. Researchers placed the middle age group between the ages of 35 and 64.

GlaxoSmithKline accused of Paying to Delay Production of Generics
Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has been accused of paying fellow pharmaceutical rivals to slow down production of generic versions of the most profitable antidepressant the company had. Britain’s Office of Fair Trading launched its own investigation into the payoffs that Glaxo has been accused of making to keep its sales of Seroxat as high as possible for as long as possible.
The alleged payments have been dubbed “pay for delay” and are said to have taken place between 2001 and 2004 to...
One out of Seven Moms Affected by Postpartum Depression
It has been well documented that some women, after having a child, suffer from depression. However, what was less known until now is how many women suffer from postpartum depression.
A study that was the largest of its kind to date showed that up to one out of every 7 mothers suffers from some form of postpartum depression. The study, which was published this week, found that amongst women that were tracked for a full year after giving birth, close to 22% at some point were depressed.

Depression Following a Stroke Increases Death Risk
Researchers have determined that depression associated with a patient who has just suffered a stroke, increases the risk of that patient dying. Patients, whose history included a stroke and depression, were significantly at a higher risk of dying of all-cause or stroke related deaths, compared to individuals who did not suffer either a stroke or depression, over a period of 20 years of follow up in the recently completed study.
The new study highlights the amount of impact depression has on those...
Soda Drinking Tied to Depression
A recent study has determined that people who drink a more than average amount of soda and sweetened fruit drinks, whether regular or diet, are at a higher risk of depression. Coffee drinkers however have a slightly lower risk of developing depression.
Previous studies found that drinking sugary beverages was tied to a higher prevalence of suicidal thoughts, depression and other distress mentally. However, the recent study was the first prospective examination, meaning people were followed over a...
Study Ties Depression and Diet together
If you are not feeling positive or are anxious without an apparent reason, a recent study says there might be a chance those ill feelings are linked to the food you consume or more importantly what you do not eat.
A recently published study established a link between emotions that are negative, including anxiety and depression, with a diet that is high-sugar and high fat.
According to this study’s results, people who have a diet high in fatty junk food might change the chemistry of their brain....
Stroke Risk Increased by Distress
Adults who are older and have high distress levels are more apt to have a certain form of stroke than those people who are not as troubled, a recent study indicates. Distress is made up of a measure of depression, stress, dissatisfaction with one’s life and negativity.
Researchers said that many previous studies look at depression and its relationship to risk of heart attack or stroke. However, this study wanted to find a general tendency that a negative outlook has on someone’s life.
In the...
Talking Therapies Help Depression
Patients that have depression and fail to see benefits from taking antidepressant medication might be helped by also receiving a type of therapy called CBT, says new research that was published last Friday.
Following a large-scale trial that tested the effectiveness of CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy, alongside medications designed for depression, researchers said they have determined that combining the two works when just treatment with drugs failed.
The lead researcher of the study has said...
Teva Takes Generic Antidepressant off Shelves
The world’s largest maker of generic drugs, Teva Pharmaceuticals has announced it agreed to yank its entire generic version of Wellbutrin XL from pharmacies and store shelves across the United States. Teva’s decision followed a report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that said the medication was not a good enough match for the original form of the drug.
The FDA took a step that was very unusual for the U.S. regulatory agency. The FDA acknowledged that the very popular generic version...
Night Light Exposure Might Contribute To Depression
A new study says that being exposed at night to a certain amount of light, could contribute to depression. At Ohio State University, a doctoral student performed an experiment that analyzed relationships between mood disorder and being exposed to artificial light during the night.
Participants in the study were female hamsters, since both rodent and human females are over twice as apt to develop a major depressive disorder as males. One particular group of hamsters received 16 hours each day of normal...
