Dementia is a disorder that affects different parts of the brain through the loss of memory, attention problems, and language issues. It is characterized by the progressive deterioration in cognitive and thought functions. While it typically strikes older people, it can also affect younger adults as well. The symptoms are individual to the person who is being affected but the first one for all sufferers is usually short term memory loss.
Short term memory loss means that someone may not remember something that was said as little as 10 minutes previously. This does not mean that everyone who has a memory lapse is going to develop dementia. It is simply one of the very common symptoms of people who have dementia.
As the disease progresses, there are other problems with day to day tasks such as getting dressed. A person who suffers from dementia may have trouble remembering the order in which clothes are to be put on. Understanding what clothing type the weather requires is another symptom, such as dressing for summer during the winter and vice versa.
People suffering from dementia often have a hard time keeping up with a conversation. They tend to lose track of what was being said even when they were the ones doing the talking. Other routine things such as paying bills and taking medication will be forgotten.
More serious symptoms of dementia deal with moodiness of the patient as the there are parts of the brain affected that work to regulate emotions and normal activities. These moods can be affected by fear and anxiety. The patient becomes frightened by her or his inability to figure out what is going on and panics.
If you know someone who is showing some signs that may point to the onset of dementia, it is important to get them to a doctor. There are tests that can be conducted that will show if it is, in fact, dementia or not.
