Fighting Suicidal Thoughts
Many times people have suicidal thoughts especially in these current times of financial disasters and other economic worries. Money woes are not the only reasons for suicidal thoughts. When a relationship breaks up or the death of a close loved one happens, there are a lot of people who just cannot handle it. They would rather be dead than alone, or they want to die so they can join their loved ones in the afterlife. Depression in general is another reason that people consider taking their own lives.
If you know of someone who is in this mind set, there are some things you can do to help. These include:
- First of all, refrain from being judgmental. If you are going to help someone who is this desolate, you must keep your personal opinions to yourself.
- Be a good listener. If the suicidal person is willing to talk, you can offer the best help just by listening, at least in the beginning. As a huge part of the problem is that most suicidal people won’t talk, if you can get this person to talk to you, LET them. This is the best way to find out just what is causing this severe and extreme unhappiness.
- Do not leave this person alone once you know what they are contemplating.
- Make the environment safe. Remove all weapons and anything else that could be used to cause harm.
- Try to help the person come to a resolution that will make them feel better. If it is being caused by a specific issue, you may be able to help reach a workable solution.
- If it becomes too much for you to handle, or you can see that the person is not changing his or her mind about suicide, get immediate professional help.
Do everything you can for this person because they are in a huge amount of pain. But understand that if someone is truly determined to go through with this act, nothing you or anyone else can do will stop it.
