Men who drink Coffee Have Less of a Risk For Prostate Cancer

If your guy drinks coffee regularly, he may have less of a risk for getting deadly prostate cancer, so says a study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health. The study included both regular and decaf versions of coffee as being equally protective.

The associate professor of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, Lorelei Mucci, ScD, MPH, said that it was the largest study so far that looked at whether or not coffee was capable of lowering a man’s risk for the lethal form of prostate cancer.

He and his fellow scientists looked at the association between coffee drinkers and the risk of getting prostate cancer, especially the riskier version of the disease. The study followed 47,911 men who reported how much coffee they drank over a period of four year stretches occurring between 1986 to 2008. At the end of the study, only 642 men had contracted the deadly version, while a total of 5,000 cases of any type of prostate cancer occurred.

In 1986, study participants said they drank an average of 1.9 cups of coffee daily. The study showed that men who drank six or more cups of coffee a day were 2o percent less likely to get any sort of prostate cancer and a 60 percent lower risk of getting the lethal form of prostate cancer.  If they drank between one and three cups, they have a 30 percent lower risk of getting prostate cancer.

No differences were noticed between decaffeinated coffee and regular and caffeine was not thought to be a factor.

The study also took into consideration things such as lifestyle factors like smoking and not exercising, which are things that can increase the risk for prostate cancer, and are behaviors that may increase the risk for the advanced version.

Researchers are planning more studies to be able to figure out the reason that coffee helps to prevent prostate cancer. They reported that they didn’t have a full understanding of items such as what action in coffee was responsible for curbing this deadly condition

They added that if they are able to validate the findings, that it could led to developing medications to treat prostate cancer.
