Pet Allergies and How to Prevent Them

If you ask me, I’ll tell you that I like animals very much! Nevertheless, I cannot afford keeping them at home. The reason is allergy, the most uncomfortable disease ever known on the Earth. As the matter of fact, the reason for allergy can be various. However, among the most common forms of the allergic reactions are allergies to household pets.

But what is the reason of an allergic reaction to pets? The majority of people consider that pet allergy is caused by the fur of dogs or cats. Surprisingly as it may seem, the researchers have found that the main allergens are the proteins in saliva. When the pets lick themselves, the proteins stick to their fur. Another source of the proteins causing allergy is urine. It is the main source of allergens from guinea pigs and other kinds of mice and rats.

It can take two years or even more for pet allergies to develop. The symptoms can stay for more than six months after the removal of the animal. Carpet and upholstered furniture are the best reservoir for pet allergens, as the allergens can stay there for four to six weeks.

Nevertheless, there are some preventive measures that help deal with allergic reactions. The first and the most effective measure is to remove pets from your home. Of course, it is not an acceptable variant in the majority of cases. So if removal is not possible, you should keep animals out of bedrooms and other areas with carpets and upholstered furniture. You’d better bath your pets at least once a week in order to reduce the amount of allergens. Do not forget to wash your hands after playing with your pet. It is also will be good for you to clean your clothes afterwards in order to remove pet allergens. If you are located near rats or mice, you should wear a dust mask and gloves. If you follow these simple rules the course of the illness will be milder.
