Simple and Inexpensive Weight Loss Program
There must be a million diet programs out there. Most of them cost a lot of money and involve a lot of changes in your life. People who want to lose weight buy books, hire life coaches and even pay to have prepared meals delivered to their homes. They make dramatic changes in their eating habits, count calories or carbs and generally make themselves miserable. It doesn’t have to be that complicated. There are a few no-cost things you can do to lose weight.
First, watch out for the night-time munchies. Most of us sit down after dinner and turn on the TV or computer for entertainment. It is at this point that we bring out the potato chips and cookies. That’s not good for several reasons. First, it’s easy to eat a lot of snack stuff while watching TV or You Tube just because your hands aren’t busy. We’re not burning a lot of calories up while we sit there and when we’re asleep. So that snack food is probably going to end up as fat. Try not to eat after dinner. Another tactic is to and keep your hands as busy as possible. Try crossword puzzles or online scrabble while you watch TV. Anything to keep your hands busy.
If you have to snack, eat fruit. It’s sweet and has some nutritional value. An apple or orange is less than 100 calories. A medium sized peach is about 40 calories. A wedge of watermelon (10 ounces) is 92 calories. Compare that to the number of calories to that cookie you’re eating or the bowl of chips. You can eat a lot more fruit than junk food and you’ll be consuming fewer calories.
When you get a drink any time of the day, drink water instead of soda. For every soda you drink, you could probably eat a piece of fruit. Diet sodas are not the answer since some studies have shown that people tend to eat more after drinking soft drinks. That’s not a good side effect. And then there’s the whole question of artificial sweeteners. Most studies show they’re probably not good for us.
The great thing about water is that it has zero calories and you can drink as much as you want. Water fills you up and it really is good for you. Since your body is primarily composed of water, it makes sense that water is good for you. Also, drinking more water may increase your metabolism, which is the rate at which you burn calories. A recent study by Berlin’s Franz-Volhard Clinical Research Center concluded that drinking 17 ounces of water increased the study participants’ metabolism rate by 30 percent for up to 40 minutes.
That kind of increase in metabolism could even help you burn up a few potato chips. And if you skip the potato chips or cookies and eat fruit instead, you’ll definitely lose some weight.

Another inexpensive option that I tried and loved is http://www.virtualfitnesscoach.com. For the same low cost as a gym membership you get 24/7 feedback from your own personal trainer, Mel. He learns about your goals, habits and body before helping you plan daily meals and workouts. Soooo much cheaper than face-time with a personal trainer and so much more effective than trying to gauge your own calorie intake! Give it a try — I love it!
