Hemorrhoids are standard equipment in the human machine. Regardless of race, sex, religion or political persuasion, we all have hemorrhoidal veins; and it is in these veins that hemorrhoids ma develop. Hemorrhoids are mentioned in the Bible, so we have had them a long time – and they may even be honorable.
The great internal (visceral) and external (somatic) blood vessel systems of the body communicate almost incidentally but connect with anatomical regularity through the hemorrhoidal veins.
These veins inhabit the outlet of the rectum, which is called the anus. Their blood is highly oxygenated and bright red in color. If hemorrhoidal veins dilate but remain up and in the anus, they are called hemorrhoids. If they are indeed down and outers, they are called protruding hemorrhoids or piles.
Protrusion of hemorrhoids may occur if their size-development is severe enough. It may occur only with bowel movement; it may occur at any time and be replaceable or tuck-in-able; or it may be permanent.
Being guardian of the intestinal outlet, the anus is a wear-and-tear organ of prodigious durability. It is subject to continuous mechanical, chemical and bacterial insult, both natural and unnatural. There is no wonder that hemorrhoids act up now and then; the great wonder is that trouble does not happen more often. Despite being the universal symbol of ultimate disdain, this plucky little opening is a marvel of endurance and efficiency. It is the most underrated and overtreated organ we own.
Treatment of hemorrhoids, if indicated at all, must be based on accurate diagnosis which can only be established by direct professional attention.
Nonprofessional, do-it-yourself-in-the-privacy-of-your-own-home treatment not only ignores accurate diagnosis but supports sizable industrial and public relations enterprises in this country. Diets abound, additives are the rage, nostrums are innumerable and cathartics are legionary. Highly touted ointments may be soothing at best, and it is only common sense that something applied to the surface never, in the history of man, altered the course of hemorrhoidal destiny.
The relationship of hemorrhoids to cancer is one of chance only, but it is a dangerous one. The simple presence of hemorrhoids does not indicate any need for treatment. Hemorrhoids do not cause cancer, and they do not need to be removed or treated “before they turn into something.” But hemorrhoids and cancer may occur in the same general idea; they may imitate each other by bleeding, and therein lies the danger. So beware!
Never assume that any rectal bleeding you may have, whether it is profuse, scanty, and bright red or black; on the paper, in your clothing, in the toilet or on the floor is due only to hemorrhoids. Bleeding is only a sign that something is wrong; get an examination by your doctor so that an accurate diagnosis can be established. There is no set of symptoms or signs, and there are no screening tests that can accurately discriminate between hemorrhoids and cancer. Competent examination is the only means of accurate diagnosis, and early diagnosis is absolutely vital to the cure of rectal and colon cancer.
