Three Myths on Losing Weight

It seems that it takes forever to lose weight.   Once you look down that long, dark hallway of time, you just want to put another donut in your mouth and think, forget about it.   It doesn’t help when we get flooded with all types of advertisement about the quickest way to lose weight.  So, we try it, thinking that “this” just might work.   Well, it doesn’t.  To help you avoid this vicious weight loss cycle, here are three myths to completely avoid when your journey to losing weight.

You can look just like a celebrity.

Many celebrities have paid thousands to millions of dollars to trainers and plastic surgeons to get that perfect look.  They even pay for dieticians or chefs to live in their houses and guide them to a healthy way of eating.  The average person can’t afford these experts and specialists.  Unless you can afford breast augmentation or a personal in-home trainer, you’re going to have to work hard to lose and keep the weight off.  Focus on ‘your’ body and its maximum potential, not on trying to look like a celebrity.

You need to look muscular to be fit.

If want to be a bodybuilder, then yes, you need some serious muscles.  But, it is a myth that you need to look muscular and ‘cut’ to be fit.  It is true that you will gain muscle while losing weight when mixing toning exercises with cardio, and it may even seem that you are gaining weight.  But, you are actually losing weight and gaining muscle.  It just so happen that muscle weighs more than fat.  But, this does not mean that you will look like the young Arnold Swarchenegger.

You can lose 20 pounds in 10 days.

This myth can leave you disappointed and on the verge of giving up losing weight altogether.  Healthy weight loss is about two to three pounds a week.  Multiply that times four and the maximum sum is 12.  It’s more realistic that you can lose weight the “healthy” way by eating healthier and working out at least three days a week for at least 45 minutes.  Don’t believe the hype about losing 20 pounds in 10 days.

A friend once told me not try and eat the whole elephant, just bit off a chunk at a time.  That is exactly what you should do.  Set a goal of how much weight you want to lose, device a diet plan and a workout plan, and do it!
