Three Stages of Addiction Recovery
For people who are trying to recover from an addiction it should be understood at the outset that there is a lot of time and patience involved in recovery, especially in the beginning. It can be a very difficult road and it takes a strong commitment in order for the recovery to be successful. The recovery period consists of 3 stages. It’s important to know that whatever stage of recovery you are in there are certain tasks that you will need to accomplish in order to move onto the next stage. This is true no matter what your addiction is. Before you can totally recover from any addiction, you must change all the negative parts of your life.
During the first stage of addiction recovery you will spend most of the time trying to control the addiction. If this is alcohol or drugs, or even cigarettes, you will need to adjust as you taper off from the use of your addiction. It is during this stage that a good strong support system is important. You will need people around you who can encourage you and keep you from backsliding.
Once this very difficult stage has been conquered, you move into the second stage of recovery. This part is about skill management and technical support for you. Keeping the urges under control is a very large part of this stage. The first, and hardest, stage is adjusting to being without your addiction, or crutch. Think on any damage that you may have caused from being addicted. In addition, you need to figure out what caused the addiction in the first place. Once you know why, chances are you can totally lick this addiction.
This is what moves you into the final stage of addiction recovery. In this stage, you have regained your strength and you can now heal your past mistakes. Repair any relationships that you may have broken during the period of your addiction. This can be done through admissions and apologies and will make your heart much lighter.
